About our winner, Sam Selzer

“Making a career in aviation has been a goal from a very early age. My Uncle was a flight instructor in the Civilian Pilot Training Program during WW2 and following the war, taught my father to fly. My father went on to enlist in the Air Force and flew C97’s. Following his discharge, he secured a job in the flight department of Collins Radio, later to become Rockwell Collins. I had many opportunities to go to the corporate hanger with my father and observe the lifestyle of a pilot which is what sent me on my own career trajectory.

“In high school, I took lessons at the local FBO going through solo and a few cross countries. Following high school, I entered the flight program at Iowa Lakes Community College. There I earned a degree in Aviation Management as well as a CFI rating. I put the CFI rating to use in building flight time as I completed a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Iowa.  Following college, I spent a couple years flying cancelled checks around at night in twin Cessnas  for Sioux Falls Aviation. After building time and experience, I took a position at Air Midwest, a regional airline operating under the Trans World Express banner. I flew BAE31 (Jetstreams) there for a couple years.

“I moved into the jet age by accepting a job in the flight department of IBP (Iowa Beef Producers). There I flew the Falcon 10’s, Falcon 20’s, and an occasional trip an a BE58 Baron. Fast forward eight years, I decided to join the growing fractional ownership industry, mainly for a more predictable schedule. At that time, I was hired by Raytheon Travel Air to fly the Hawker 800XP. Travel Air later merged with Flight Options, which presented more opportunities to fly the Falcon 50, and Citation X.

“In keeping with my love of lifelong learning, I joined the Training Department at Flight Options where I progressed to Lead Ground Instructor, and Manager of Training. The demands of the Manager of Training position, however, didn’t afford a lot of time out flying the line, so when the opportunity to transfer to the newly acquired Flexjet International Large Cabin ‘Red Label’ program presented itself, I jumped at the chance. That is where I find myself today as an Aircraft Commander overseeing a team of four other outstanding Captains and two Cabin Servers on our own dedicated tail number Gulfstream 450.

“In my personal life, I have a loving and understanding wife of 28 years, four awesome children ranging from 17 to 25. I also enjoy home renovation, wrenching on vehicles of all kinds, music, and the occasional motorcycle ride.”
