In the U.S., FARs give us guidance on what we train, how we train, and when we train. In many cases these FARs were written decades ago when training and airplanes were much different than today. Have they kept up with new techniques and technology? Perhaps they have, but maybe some need a fresh look.
At the big airlines, with few exceptions, training is very standardized. All the pilots that fly for the blue airline train to their standards, and all the pilots that fly for the red airline train to their similar but slightly different standards. If we compare how many individual training programs we have in our Part 91 and 135 environment, we have a vast lack of standardization. Each operator has their own specific focus areas and new techniques that fit within the FARs. That doesn’t mean we aren’t training smartly, but it highlights an opportunity to improve and include more standardization across the industry, and thus be more effective and efficient. Furthermore, is your training center teaching your curriculum the way you want them to?
